Literature: The Beginning or End of an Era?

Literature means "acquaintance with letters". It can be called the art of written works. But not every piece of writing can be termed as a literary work. Literature has developed in various languages. It is quite difficult to say which is the fast work of literature, since literature has developed at different points of time in different cultures. Literature has taken over the oral tradition in every culture. As literature was introduced, orature has lost its importance in main stream society but continued to exist within informal social structures. With literary works dominating the oral tradition a large part of history (unwritten or unrecorded) went into oblivion.

Literature is the mirror of society. Different historical periods have greatly influenced contemporary literature. Hence literature written in different time period has its own characteristics. In fact there are chronological literary periods referring to works of literature belonging to a particular age. For example if we take a look at English literature we will see that it is divided into various literary periods such as classical, medieval, renaissance, neo-classical, age of reason, romanticism, Victorian period, modernism and post modernism.

On the basis of their structure literary works can be largely divided into poetry, drama and prose. Within these broad categorizations there can be piece of works written in different genres such as epic, lyric, novel, short story, tragedy, comedy etc. Interesting literature is not merely limited to books these days. It has expanded to embrace comics, graphic novels as well as electronic literature.
